Literacy campaign 2018
The Scripps Howard Foundation is “Giving light. Changing lives” by fostering literacy among children living in poverty.
Through its “If You Give a Child a Book . . . ” literacy campaign, the Foundation has distributed more than 100,000 new books to children. The campaign is a partnership of the Foundation, employees of The E.W. Scripps Company and members of the Scripps family.
The literacy campaign receives donations from Scripps employees and matching dollars from members of the Scripps family. Every dollar is used for the purchase of books for children in need. Books are purchased at cost through a partnership with Scholastic, further maximizing the purchase power of every donated dollar.
Each station selects a nonprofit to be the beneficiary of the book campaign. Annually on National Reading Day, the stations deliver books to the nonprofits, which then give them to children who are in need.
As part of the campaign, the Foundation has provided $50,000 in literacy grants each year to select nonprofit organizations that distribute books to children. The five organizations each receiving a $10,000 grant this year are in Lansing, Michigan; Phoenix, Arizona; Cleveland; Columbia, Missouri; and Detroit.
